Cannizzaro reaction: The aldehyde formed reacts with $HCHO$ and concentrated $NaOH$ (cross-Cannizzaro reaction). The aldehyde is reduced to the corresponding alcohol ($5$-chloro$-2-$hydroxybenzyl alcohol),and $HCHO$ is oxidized to sodium formate $(HCOONa)$.$3$. Acidification: Finally,treatment with $H_3O^+$ converts the phenoxide and formate salt into $5$-chloro$-2-$hydroxybenzyl alcohol and formic acid $(HCOOH)$.
